How a Buff & Coat Works

A buff and coat is a one-day hardwood floor maintenance service that restores shine and adds a fresh protective finish without sanding the wood. It’s a cost-effective way to extend the life of your hardwood floors before full refinishing is needed.

Deep Cleaning

Hardwood floors are professionally cleaned to remove dirt, oils, and buildup that can prevent a new finish from bonding properly.

Light Abrasion

The existing finish is lightly abraded to create a surface the new finish can adhere to. This process refreshes the floor without sanding down to bare wood.

New Protective Finish

A fresh coat of durable finish is applied, restoring shine and adding a new protective layer to extend the life of your floors.
Most buff & coat projects are completed in one day with minimal disruption to your home.

Commonly asked questions about our Buff and Coat service

How should I prepare before a buff and coat?

Clear the furniture from the rooms being serviced and make sure the floors are reasonably clean. We handle the professional cleaning before the process begins.

Can all hardwood floors be buffed and coated?

Most site-finished hardwood floors are good candidates. Floors with a wax finish, factory-applied aluminum oxide finish, or floors that have been refinished many times may not be compatible. We check this during the estimate.

Do I need to leave my home during a buff and coat?

Most homeowners stay home during the process. There is minimal dust and the finish odor is much lighter than a full refinish. We recommend good ventilation and keeping pets out of the work area.

How long does a buff and coat last?

Typically 3–7 years depending on traffic, maintenance, and the condition of the original finish. Homes with pets or heavy foot traffic may need it more frequently.

How much does a buff and coat cost?

Cost depends on the square footage and condition of your floors. It is significantly less expensive than full refinishing. We provide a written estimate after evaluating your floors — no guessing.

How long before we can walk on the floors?

Usually the same evening with socks. Full cure typically takes 3–5 days, during which you should avoid dragging furniture or placing rugs.

Will it remove scratches?

Light surface scratches often improve significantly after a buff and coat. Deep scratches or gouges that have cut through the finish into the wood require sanding and refinishing to fully repair.

How do I know if my floors need a buff and coat or full refinishing?

If your finish is dull or lightly scratched but the wood underneath looks intact, a buff and coat is likely the right call. If you can see bare wood, dark stains, or deep damage, refinishing is needed. We evaluate this as part of every estimate.
