About the project
The homeowners had three rooms — two bedrooms and an office — that were still carpeted, while the rest of the main level already had maple hardwood. They wanted the new floors to match the existing ones without having to sand and refinish the entire main level.
After taking a closer look, we found the existing maple had a slightly aged tone and a bit of natural character. Matching that meant selecting the right color and grade of wood, along with the right finish system.
Instead of recommending refinishing everything, we installed new 2¼" caramel maple in the three rooms. We used an 80/20 mix of first and second grade boards to blend in a small amount of character so it would feel consistent with the existing floor. The floors were finished with a clear water-based sealer and two coats of satin to match the sheen and color already in the home.
The result was a clean, consistent transition from room to room. The new maple blended well with the existing floors, and the homeowners were able to avoid refinishing the rest of the main level.
This work was completed in the winter, so the wood acclimated in the home for about a week before installation to match normal living conditions.

From the customer
We were referred to Justin by our realtor. We wanted new flooring installed in part of our home to match existing flooring. Justin was fantastic working with us from afar and with our daughter locally to beautifully accomplish something another flooring company told us couldn’t be done without additional work at a hefty cost. Justin was accommodating, reasonable in his pricing, prompt with his work, kept us informed along the way and worked with our daughter/FaceTime visits with us for onsite consultation and visits. We recommend him without reservation for any hardwood flooring project.

This walkthrough shows the before and after of three carpeted rooms that were converted to 2¼" caramel maple hardwood in Lakeville. The video includes progress clips, finished floor footage, and an explanation of how we matched the new installation to the existing main-level maple without refinishing the entire level.
Alright, we’re here in Lakeville on this one.
Originally, these three rooms — two bedrooms and an office — were all carpet. The rest of the main level already had maple hardwood that had been refinished a couple years ago. The homeowners really wanted these rooms to match, but they did not want to sand and refinish the entire main level again.
So the challenge here was matching existing maple as closely as possible.
We removed the carpet, prepped the subfloor, and installed new 2¼-inch maple throughout all three rooms. I went with caramel maple because it has a slightly warmer, more aged tone to it. If you use a really light, clear maple, it tends to come back more blonde and it won’t blend as well with older maple.
We also did about an 80/20 mix of first and second grade boards. Second grade has a little more natural character and a few more knots, so that helped the new install feel more consistent with the existing floor without overdoing it.
Everything was finished with a clear water-based sealer and two coats of satin to match the sheen that was already in the house.
The end result tied in really clean. You can walk from the original hardwood into these rooms and it feels consistent.
And the biggest win here was that they were able to avoid refinishing the entire main level, which saved them a lot of time and money.
