About the project
The existing prefinished hardwood floors showed heavy wear, and the homeowner wanted to move away from the original dark factory finish. They had dogs, which had contributed to surface scratching over time. After evaluating the floor, we confirmed it was a full ¾ inch solid hardwood and could be refinished instead of replaced.
Once sanding began, we found the flooring was primarily white oak. Because prefinished floors are coated with aluminum oxide, the sanding process required removing the factory finish and the existing bevels. This allowed the floor to take on the look of a site-finished hardwood floor.
The homeowner chose to keep the wood natural with a clear water-based sealer to preserve its tone. They upgraded to a commercial-grade catalyzed finish for added durability and a faster cure time, given the dogs.
The project included the upstairs, main level, and staircase, so the homeowner chose to stay with family while the work was completed. The full process took about one week.
